Undercover Mormon A Spy in the House of the Gods Mr Th Metzger 9781542407564 Books
Th. Metzger, author of Drowning in Fire, This is Your Final Warning, Blood and Volts: Edison, Tesla and the Electric Chair, and The Birth of Heroin and the Demonization of the Dope Fiend, has wed his expected passion for edgy topics to what some might consider a strategy of high personal risk. With Undercover Mormon: a Spy in the House of the Gods (Roadswell Editions 2014), Metzger really does go under cover for nearly a year, posing as a Mormon convert--even to the extent of offering his own “sermons.” The result is a series of revelations that amaze even Metzger but transmutate to an oddly good-natured take on the Latter Day Saints. Funny, strange, honest, full of spiritual twists and turns: this is a celebration of religious weirdness from a writer who one might say has seen it all, written about it, and—at least so far—has lived to tell the tale. Highly recommended for anyone who can handle having their eyes opened to just a little beyond the threshold of pain. – iPedago EVOLUTION ReviewsProduct details

Undercover Mormon A Spy in the House of the Gods Mr Th Metzger 9781542407564 Books Reviews
Th. Metzger treats his foray into the Mormon world thoughtfully. His observations and experiences are bizarre and even profound. They are told with a refreshing lack of cynicism while maintaining his sharp wit and penchant for the weird. A worthwhile read.
An interesting story, well written.
How Metzger manages to take a bland, middle class American, such as myself, and coax him into seeing things through the eyes of a slightly unhinged, American mystic, I may never understand. The man makes his own rules as he narrates, yet forever succeeds in engaging the reader. I suppose we all have personal eccentricities (too often suppressed by social conditioning) that some authors know how to re-awaken.
I once heard Joseph Campbell say, in his discussions with Bill Moyers, that every generation re-makes God in its own image. In Undercover Mormon we have a large chunk of one man's lifelong, & in this case Plimpton-esque, quest to do precisely that. As the writer guides us thru his journey, which is more than a little irreverent & extremely funny, he maintains the dignity of those he encounters & respect for their belief, even if he can't always share it, himself. An unexpected mix of Radio Free Albemuth & a Fear & Loathing, which collide with a sort of self-help journal & a comparative theology text, I expect other readers will find, as I did, a very informative historical look at a Church which is, to many, a great mystery. This seems, to me, a natural companion to the musical Book of Mormon, & one which may be enjoyed by anyone, LDS or not. Give it a read. It'll make you laugh loud enough that people will wonder what's wrong with you.
This book was filled with interesting history as well as humor. I had learned some of this history of the Mormon church, but not near to the depth that the author gives. I found his dry sense of humor very entertaining.
Th. Metzger is hardly an ordinary middle aged white guy, as he tries to pretend to be throughout this wonderful read. Instead, he is a hyper aware and extremely articulate writer who masterfully pulls you into his adventure. He has a special ability to relate and explain his thinking and cognition as he details ridiculous situation after ridiculous situation that he places himself in. I won't give any details, but if you have ever been curious about Mormonism, love a good adventure, or are looking to peer into, even if just a little bit, someone else's life, I cannot recommend this book enough!
Metzger isn't irreverent. If anything, he's wide-eyed with wonderment at the ridiculous and sublime elements of Mormonism. He sets out to "infiltrate" the ranks and can't really believe that he's getting away with his ruse. But he does, until he doesn't. Very entertaining.
